Sustainabiltiy

Studying Abroad in Copenhagen

In May of 2023, I had the opportunity to study sustainability from a Scandinavian perspective. For those three weeks, we attended workshops and lectures held by professionals in their fields. We also had the chance to tour the headquarters of Danish brands that are focusing on making the fashion industry more sustainable such as GANNI, Aiayu, and Mfpen.

Eco-Printing Workshop

One of the workshops we attended was an Eco-Printing Workshop hosted by a professional who had her own brand of eco-printed apparel. She showed us how to prepare the fabric by soaking it in soy milk, which plants create which colors, and how those colors can be altered by introducing iron water. This was one of my favorite workshops and I've continued to study other ways to naturally dye apparel.

Recycled Shirt Workshop

We also had a workshop led by Anders Andersen, a sustainable design expert, on taking old pieces of clothing and creating new works of art. We each got two button-up shirts and were told to use scissors and tape to create a new look. I had a lot of fun with this exercise since I had to think outside the box to create an outfit that I would actually wear, while still being as zero-waste as possible.

Responsible Waste Management

Another one of my favorite parts of my study abroad was getting an inside tour of Copenhill, Copenhagen's famous waste-to-energy plant. We got to see a giant claw machine dropping trash into massive furnaces and we learned how they use the heat and energy produced in order to provide electricity and warm water to Copenhagen. The roof of the plant also served as a skiing slope and recreation area which was only possible because of how effective their filters were at capturing harmful gases.

Visual Merchandising

Window Displays

During my Visual Merchandising class, we were able to collaborate with brands such as Neiman Marcus and ByGeorge, and along with my peers, I got to exercise all that I learned about how to make eye-catching displays using the elements of design.

In-Store Layout

We also learned how to neatly and efficiently display merchandise by partnering with stores like C. Jane. For this exercise, we were split into small groups and given a part of the store to organize. We decided to arrange our merchandise by creating a gradient of colors that was occasionally broken up to create contrast and an overall aesthetically pleasing display.

Trend Moodboard

For my Computer-Aided Design class, I came up with an original fashion trend using guidance from actual forecasted trends of that year. Then, I crafted a visually compelling mood board to show it using Adobe Photoshop.
